Letter from Our Founder
To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this type of investing. Not most of the time, anyway. But if we’re to be honest, most people feel forced into this traditional investing style because they believe it’s their only choice.
The problem with indexed investing is that it abandons portfolios to the whims of the market, such as the sudden downturn in which we now find ourselves.
Right now, even savvy investors aren’t sure where to turn to hedge against volatility. One investor with 40 years of experience and who had invested in the last four bear markets admitted to The New York Times that he was paralyzed by the speed of this collapse.
If institutional investors are panicking, what chance do hard-working retail investors have? Their life savings are tied up in a passive portfolio structure that is completely vulnerable to the seismic market activity we are now experiencing.
To make matters worse, hard-working investors believe that uncorrelated assets, like alternative investments , are reserved for only the wealthiest and most affluent of institutional investors. Many years ago, I noticed that most Americans had the same type of portfolio. Point at any random businessperson in a crowd, and you can guess—with some accuracy—that they’re holding mutual funds and stocks, which usually live in their IRA and 401k accounts.
When you break free from reliance on the markets for your long-term investments, it’s liberating. You’ll have the opportunity to explore typically illiquid investments, like real estate, income- and growth-oriented private deals, and hedge funds where you can long and short the market.
Simply put, alternative investments may even the playing field. They give retail investors access to investment vehicles that were once exclusive to institutional wealth. They offer investor’s portfolio a potential tactical advantage, which may reduce market exposure while enhancing lifetime value.
If you’re interested in learning more about alternative investments, give us a call. We’ll gladly answer your questions.
Be well,

Founder, Managing Partner
